MOTIVATION vs. DISCIPLINE

I get asked all the time, “What is your secret to staying motivated?” and “How do you wake up THAT early?” It comes down to two things: Motivation and Self-Discipline. You can get started with Motivation… but eventually that motivation will run out and leave you hanging. You need to create some discipline in your fitness lifestyle.

LET’S GET IT GOING!

Alright, so you have those perfect progress pictures taken, you’re all ready to start your fitness journey and you are feeling SO motivated to get moving and grooving! As you start your workouts and are hitting those macros your motivation is growing by the day! You wake up every morning motivated and excited to get your workout in!

As the days and weeks go on, you seem to find that your motivation and excitement to hit the gym and eat right, are slowly diminishing.  As you’re weighing out your food, and planning what you’re about to eat you decide to have a tablespoon of Peanut Butter because you think “eh, why not!” The alarm goes off early in the morning to wake you up for your morning workout, but you hit snooze and sleep in.

The motivation that you once had, is now pretty much gone.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

When this happens to me, I like to take a step back. Take a few days off and really try and focus on what your goals are… and I mean FOCUS HARD on them. Write those goals down on paper. Make a schedule of when you would like to hit those goals – plan it all out. Take some time to re-focus that mind, and body. Rest up those muscles, and take a bath – or three.

My favorite fitness journals are the Daily Greatness Fitness Journal, and the Guided Journal – No Goal Is Met!

MIX IT UP!

Take a look at how your nutrition is going. If you’ve been eating the same thing day in and day out, bored as all get out with your meals, then CHANGE IT UP. You don’t have to eat steamed veggies and tilapia or bland chicken the rest of your life. That is the joy of Flexible Dieting / I.I.F.Y.M.M. (If It Fits Your Macros & Micros) and this lifestyle. You are able to pick and choose what to eat, to fit your macro goals. CHOOSE WHAT YOU ENJOY. Find what you love that will help you reach your goals! You got this.

Track what you are eating. Even if you don’t usually track your food, I really encourage you to plug in what you eat in a day. It will really open your eyes to what you may be lacking, or what you may be eating in a surplus. Tracking is an AWESOME tool to see where you are at, and what you can change. I like to use My Fitness Pal. (Blog post on IIFYM and Macro Tracking COMING SOON)

Change up your exercise routine. If you’ve been doing the same old cardio workout every day.. change it up and go to a weight lifting class. Most gyms will let you get a walk through with a personal trainer explaining the machines, and how to use them. Get a workout buddy, or go to a spin class. Just change it up and switch your routine up a bit! The body loves change.

MAKE IT A PRIORITY

A good tip to follow, is to schedule in your workouts like you would a business meeting. Think of it as an appointment you can not cancel. Make your workouts and your health a PRIORITY! The best thing that you can ever do for yourself, is to INVEST in yourself.

Motivation is directly linked to discipline. Motivation is what gets you inspired, and excited…  and discipline is what keeps you going. It is where your drive comes from to push you through those bad days and to keep you going.

You need to have discipline on days that you are lacking motivation.  Discipline is when you know what has to be done – and you get it done, no matter how unmotivated you may feel.

PUSH THROUGH!

When you feel like maybe you have hit a plateau in your training, or you aren’t progressing in the way that you want, this is also when your motivation can start to decrease.  This is when your discipline comes into play. You just have to keep pushing through the bad days! I know it can be so tough, but a bad workout is still better than not working out at all. When you push through and finally get passed that damn plateau, you will see all of those little changes your body was making, and you will be so so so proud of yourself for pushing through!

QUOTES TO KEEP IN MIND

My favorite thing to do when I am lacking motivation, is to read motivational quotes! The first quote is featured above, but it is absolutely perfect for this topic.

  • “You will never always be motivated. You will have to learn to be disciplined.
  • “This is the year i will be stronger, braver, kinder & unstoppable. This year I will be FIERCE”
  • “You can’t expect to succeed if you only put in work on the days you feel like it”
  • “Don’t think about what can happen in a month. Don’t think about what can happen in a year. Just focus on the 24 hours right in front of you and do what you can to get closer to where you want to be.”
  • “Consistency is what transform average into excellence”
  • “Great thing’s don’t come from staying in your comfort zone.”
  • “Everybody falls down sometimes. The question is ‘Who gets back up?’ ”
